Ad suggests being a banker is a social faux pas – unless it’s for St George
St George Bank has relaunched an ad suggesting its embarrassing to work in banking unless it’s for St George.
The ad, created by Ogilvy, sees barbecue diners fall silent after a guest reveals that he’s a banker – until he hastily adds that he’s with St George.
The campaign is the latest in a series to tap into the public dislike of the banking industry.
ANZ created bad tempered Barbara the bank manager, who live in Bank World, while NAB ran its much discussed breakup campaign highlighting the failings of its competitors.
St George is a subsidiary of Westpac.
The production company was the Ogilvy-aligned Plush.
The new campaign is a re-edit of an ad that first ran in 2004.

Isn’t this ad a couple of years old?

Old ad! If they’re refreshing it, why not say so?

Pincus wrote that spot… pity copywriters can’t get residuals for cover versions…

Have you seen that new Commonwealth ad with Michael Bay directing a commercial?

Your Cap’n muses on what the guests would say if he said, “Wholly owned by those bastards at Westpac”?

And I thought I watched a lot of television…

I thought St George had broken up with that ad.

It’s the most remembered, recalled and liked ad St George have ever done… it still comes up in tracking studies today…. hence the 2.0 remake.

Is this a remake? I fail to see how it differs from the old ad.
@mumbrella – was this story pushed to you by Ogilvy? If so, why no mention of its history. Story is written as if this is new. How about an update to reflect reality?

Hi Scott (and others),

Good one Tim.
2004 – wow! That long ago.

Regardless of its creative origins, I bank with St George and I can assure you they’re still a pack of heartless, money grabbing arseholes.

Wayne, lets go through stones.
You’d think our fees could contribute to some new creative huh?!

Having worked in marketing at St george this ad is pulled out every time numbers start dwindling. It immediately sparks customer enthusiasm in the brand and results directly in sales! Happy days if you dont have to pay for a new brand TVC every year!

This article is nearly as lazy as the ad itself.
The ad was originally written by Wybin Lawrence TBWA and I think by the guys who are now known 12:20.
Just make a couple of calls. It’s known as journalism.

I remember when we re-hashed this the first time at Whybins in 2006… it was gonna push the NPS score off the charts… but didn’t.
It won’t do it this time either because no one believes it. Just being nice doesn’t cut it anymore.

Bad ad in 2004. Bad recycled ad in 2011.

Let’s recycle everything and just pay residuals. Problem solved.
