AFL wins the Friday night TV ratings sports battle

AFL proved the most popular sport across the five metro city area on Friday night, after it pulled in 599,000 metro viewers for Seven.

The majority of that audience came from Melbourne and Adelaide, with 302,000 and 169,000 viewers respectively, according to OzTam’s preliminary overnight ratings.

Nine’s NRL showing achieved 348,000 metro viewers, which was beaten by SBS’ showing of the Uruguay vs France World Cup match, which pulled 377,000 viewers.

Outside of sport, Seven won the most-watched show of the night with its news program, which clocked 908,000 metro viewers.

Nine’s news show came in a close second with 893,000.

The most-watched non news show was Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens, which achieved 596,000 metro viewers.

Ten’s top show was The Living Room, with 436,000 metro viewers.

Seven’s strong performance gave it the largest overall audience share, with a 23.6% main channel share compared to Nine’s 15.5%.

Despite the World Cup, SBS only achieved a 6.4% main channel share.

ABC’s news shows and period drama Endeavor meant it beat Ten in main channel share, with 12.8% compared to Ten’s 10.1%.
