AFR marks 50 years as a daily

The Australian Financial Review marks 50 years as a daily newspaper.

The announcement:

Australia’s first national daily newspaper, The Australian Financial Review celebrates a major milestone today when it marks a half century of daily publication with a special 50th anniversary edition.

The special issue not only highlights the history of Australia’s first and only business daily, but also the history of the Australian economy over the past 50 years, and the businesses that make it run.

“This is a significant day in the history of newspaper publishing in Australia,” said Michael Stutchbury, Editor-in-Chief of the Financial Review

“Australia’s business, economic and political landscapes are almost unrecognisable from the day in 1963 when the Financial Review moved from a bi-weekly publication to become a daily newspaper.

“Over that time, we have covered every key event that has taken place in the business, economic and political arenas, with a commitment to quality reporting and commentary that has earned the respect not only of our readers in Australia, but around the world,” he said.

In 1951 The Australian Financial Review launched as a weekly, became a bi-weekly in 1961, and in 1963 went daily to meet the increasing demand from readers for a reliable and frequent source of financial and economic news.

“Importantly, the Financial Review is here for the long term, and is constantly evolving to engage with, and meet the needs of its readers. We are now spread over four distinct platforms – print, online, mobile and, most recently, television,” Stutchbury said.

Among the significant developments at the Financial Review in more recent years have been:

· In 1997 the Financial Review added a weekend edition, this year retitled AFR Weekend.

· In February 1995, the weekly inserted AFR Magazine was launched

· afr.com launched in 2006. It was Australia’s first publication to move to a digital subscription

· In March 2012 the Financial Review launched an app for iPad, judged the Best News App for the past two years by the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association (PANPA)

· In May 2013 the masthead branched into network television with the Financial Review Sunday program broadcast on the Nine Network on Sunday mornings

· In August 2013 the Financial Review shared the Newspaper of the Year award in its circulation category at the PANPA awards.

· In November 2013 The AFR Magazine wins best Newspaper Inserted Magazine at the Australian Magazine Awards.

Today’s special issue is edited by the Financial Review senior writer and former editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, Andrew Clark and includes a 20 page wrap with illustrations by David Rowe of Australia’s leading business figures since 1963.

A feature will be a special Financial Review list of the 50 “leaders, builders, pioneers and stirrers” who have shaped the Australian business landscape over the past half century.
