A new partnership between AFTRS and Griffith University will deliver short courses targeting in-demand screen industry skills from October.
The announcement:
The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and Griffith University will together support the continued development of talented Queensland screen practitioners with a series of short courses targeting in-demand skills commencing in October.
Five short courses will be offered by AFTRS, in partnership with Griffith Film School at Griffith University: Intro to Producing & Screen Business; Assistant Directing Fundamentals; Locations Department Intensive; Writers Room Intensive; and Production Accounting Intensive.
Enrolments are now open for these courses. Further information here:
Assistant Directing Fundamentals is a two-day course to be held on Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 October and led by Industry expert 1st Assistant Director Liam Branagan. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet other industry professionals in key production roles. This is the only Assistant Director’s course in Australia approved by the Australian Director’s Guild (ADG).
Writers Room Intensive is a five-day program to be held 20-24 October. Writers’ rooms have become an increasingly essential component of contemporary series and long-form screen production. In this five-day intensive course, participants will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to collaborate effectively in a writers’ room.
This course is specifically designed to provide writers with insight into the functioning of these rooms, fostering an understanding of the key skills required for productive collaboration. Through hands-on learning, participants will engage in activities covering ideation, storylining/plotting, note-taking, drafting and feedback.
Intro to Producing & Screen Business (Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 October) will explore all facets of the role of producer and their responsibilities from the conception of a screen project to bringing it to market. Participants will learn about intellectual property and developing screen ideas, budgeting, below-the-line production to post-production, and the state of the screen industry.
Production Accounting Intensive is a five-day course (3-7 November) led by industry experts providing a strong understanding of a screen budget, finance plan, cashflow and drawdown schedule, and the obligations and requirements across each stage of production. The course is ideal for accountants looking to transition into the screen industry and better understand screen finance and budgeting. It is also ideal for producers, line producers and production managers looking to bolster their production budget management skills and learn complimentary screen business skills.
Locations Department Intensive is a comprehensive five-day course running from 17 to 21 November, exploring the dynamic world of film and TV location management. Presented in collaboration with the Australian Location Managers Guild, the course covers all aspects of the locations department, from scouting and securing locations to ensuring on-set safety and managing logistics.
This new partnership continues AFTRS’ collaboration with industry and education partners such as Edith Cowan University in WA and RMIT in Victoria, to ensure Australians, regardless of where they are situated, have the opportunity to undertake world-class screen industry training.
The short courses are developed in consultation with the wider screen sector who assist with identifying skills gaps in an industry that continues to grow year on year.
Dr Nell Greenwood, AFTRS CEO, said: “As the national screen and audio school, AFTRS is committed to in-person training in every State and Territory. We couldn’t hope for a better partner in Queensland than Griffith Film School. Dr Belinda Burns, chief creative officer of Screen Queensland, said: “As Queensland continues to grow as a production destination of choice for local and attracted films and series, we are seeing increasing demand for experienced homegrown talent both above and below-the-line. Screen Queensland welcomes the addition of these new short courses through the AFTRS and Griffith University partnership to support skills development across the sector.”
