Graduates told career prospects are bright for the communications industry

Agencies need to do more to attract and develop young talent in the industry, and those who do are doing the best work, agency bosses told Mumbrella360.

As GroupM ran the M Grad Project at the event,  designed to give graduates insights into careers in the communications industry, Maxus CEO Jon Chadwick argued that it was a good time to start a career.

He said: “Don’t just think about it as a job, think about it as a journey. This is the starting point today. Please don’t have anxiety because you have got great careers ahead of you.”

And the Mumbrella Question Time panel agreed.

Tourism Australia’s chief marketing officer Nick Baker said there are more opportunities now than ever and these will only grow as technological developments keep a rapid pace.

“I have got a whole bunch of people in jobs that didn’t exist five to 20 years ago. It’s never been more important and wonderful time to be in marketing,” he said.

Executive creative director at McCann John Mescall said the industry provides graduates with so many opportunities to express themselves strategically and creatively it will set them up to work in a very broad creative field, and “there has never been a more exciting time to work as a creative person in advertising.”

And Henry Tajer, chairman of Mediabrands, said agencies who value fresh talent are storming ahead.

“Graduates coming into the industry are the one’s bringing the value into our industry,” he said.

“You guys are actually the experts now. The companies that listen to young guys coming in and let them present before senior clients are doing the best work.”
