Amanda Johnston-Pell departs Telstra
Amanda Johnston-Pell – whose career at Telstra soared after she oversaw BWM’s Bigpond “rabbits” ad – will not return to the telco’s marketing team, the company confirmed today.
The announcement follows a shake up of the telco’s marketing team and arrival of creative Mark Collis as director of creativity and innovation.
An internal announcement from chief marketing officer Kate McKenzie said:
“After eight years of service in a career of significant achievements, Amanda Johnston-Pell has decided not to return to Telstra at the end of her maternity leave in December.
“Amanda was the driving force behind several campaigns that became part of the Australian psyche, such as the internationally recognized and multi-award winning “rabbits” campaign and her significant contribution to the organisation will be remembered by Telstra, and its customers, for many years to come.
“On behalf of the team at Telstra I thank Amanda for her leadership, creativity and passion at Telstra and wish her the best of luck with future endeavours. We will be arranging a farewell function for Amanda and I will be in touch with details once arrangements have been finalised.”
Inevitable.

Bob, are you serious? She was tough and propped up by a team of agencies. I don’t think she ever had an original marketing idea in her life…

Good on her! Spend time with the family… why are we so quick to judge? And in terms of turnover, it seems it’s much worse since she left.

Hey Jane,
You’re right – AJJP met every morning with the Telstra agencies when she first started to work out what needed to be done.
It took 3 months, but finally she discovered that
– No-one knew what Next G was
– People hated Telstra.
– Other bloody obvious stuff
And I believe Telstra made record profits prior to her becoming marketing E.D.
Kate McKenzie – what fabulous luck that Amanda wants to become a stay at home mom – I’m sure there was no large payout to avoid any nasty issues. Money well spent.
