Amazon announces sponsorship of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018

Amazon will participate in the WithYouWithMe Career Expo to highlight the value of employing veterans 26 October

Amazon today announced it will join the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 presented by Jaguar Land Rover, as an Official Sponsor. This announcement follows the sponsorship of last year’s Invictus Games in Toronto. Amazon will also participate in the WithYouWithMe (WYWM) Career Expo held in support of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 to contribute to its employment legacy and promote Amazon as an employer of choice for veterans and military spouses in Australia and throughout the world.

The commitment to hire veterans comes from the very top of Amazon. Founder and CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos said: “We actively seek leaders who can invent, think big, have a bias for action and deliver results on behalf of our customers. These principles look very familiar to men and women who have served their country in the armed forces, and we find that their experience leading people is invaluable in our fast-paced work environment.”

Amazon recruiters and hiring managers from Operations, Amazon Web Services and other Australian-based teams will be attending the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 and the WYWM Career Expo at The Novotel, Sydney Olympic Park on 26 October 2018.

Amazon Director of Talent Acquisition EMEA Operations Georgina Yellowlees will be representing Amazon at the WYWM Career Expo and said: “At Amazon, we are thrilled to offer veterans the opportunity to launch into exciting post-military careers with limitless possibilities. Amazon has a long history of attracting military veterans to work across different areas of the company in the UK, US, Europe and now Australia. At the end of 2017, Amazon.com announced that it employs more than 17,500 veterans and military spouses and plans to hire over 10,000 more by 2021.”

The team will not only promote the opportunities within Amazon in Australia but also the global availability of roles in the USA, UK and other European countries.

Veteran and Amazon Manager, Military Programs NA, Tim Bomke said: “In Australia, like other global locations, veterans face considerable challenges in transitioning to the business world after military service. I advocate for and recruit veterans across the company and know the culture of Amazon is a great match that sees veterans able to innovate, invent, and build from engineers and logisticians, associates and managers in Operational Fulfilment Centres through to Amazon Web Services.”

Gillian Russell, Veteran, Military Spouse and Amazon Manager, Military Programs EU continued: “Many veterans can suffer long months of unemployment and struggle to find roles which match their skills. Amazon places special value on the unique abilities that military personnel have accrued during their careers. Our Leadership Principles will be very familiar to them as they are based on the same core values of integrity, loyalty, discipline, commitment, ownership, respect and courage. Amazon welcomes veterans, and our recruitment teams are dedicated to removing barriers for them to enable them to find a suitable career path. We look forward to meeting many Australian veterans during the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 and at the WYWM Career Expo.”

According to The Hon Darren Chester MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs: “Leaving the defence force is a significant change for our veterans, which is why it is vital we ensure ex-service men and women
have the support to find meaningful careers when they return to civilian life. Too often we look at our ex-servicemen and women and see them only as a uniform. But we must also see them as executives and engineers, managers, scientists, miners, or any number of other professions.”

Veteran or military spouses who are looking for a new career are invited to attend the WYWM Career Expo and meet the Amazon recruitment team. The Career Expo has been organised by veteran training and employment group, WYWM. The fair is free to attend for veterans and their family and friends.

WithYouWithMe CEO ANZ Tom Larter said: “Close to 6,000 veterans have now gone through our program in Australia, and we find that a lot of their skills are transferrable to anything from sales and operational roles through to high-tech careers. We’ve been working with the Amazon team for some time now helping veterans find new civilian roles where they can grow their skills and it’s great to have them once again supporting our event.”

Invictus Games Sydney 2018 CEO Patrick Kidd OBE said: “We are grateful to have Amazon join with us on our journey to the Invictus Games Sydney 2018. Amazon has long been a champion for veterans employment. Together we share this purpose and the partnership that we have announced today will ensure the Games have an enduring impact and legacy for former military personnel well beyond October 2018.”
