Andy Lee to front new game show on Ten, The Cube

Comedian Andy Lee has been announced as the host of The Cube Australia, a new, prime time game show which will air on Network Ten early next year.

The UK-founded format is an addition to Ten’s 2021 programming slate, unveiled at the business’ upfront presentation in October. Bachelor in Paradise and Dancing With the Stars were scrapped for next year, while the three stand out additions included Making it Australia, The Dog House, and First Inventors.

Lee will host the new show

The game show will involve contestants performing what seem like simple tasks, such as catching, balancing, memorising, and reacting, in a 4m x 4m x 4m clear box. Lee, who is also an executive producer on the show, said the $250,000 prize money ups the stakes.

“Things get tense with me and my mates when we play skill games to determine who’s going to get the next round of beers at the pub, imagine doing it for a quarter of million dollars. I can’t wait,” he said.

Ten and Viacom CBS’s head of programming, Daniel Monaghan, noted The Cube will air in prime time, and he is “thrilled [Lee] will host this brilliant series”.

“The Cube has been a huge success in the UK for years, and to bring this edge-of-your-seat game show to Australia for a local prime time version, with Andy Lee no less, is a fantastic addition to our 2021 schedule,” Monaghan added.

The local take on the format is an ITV Studios production for Ten. The UK version was produced by Objective Media Group, part of the all3media company. According to all3media International’s executive vice president across the APAC region, Sabrina Duguet, The Cube “has proven its credentials in finding family viewers across several years, in several countries” and “we are confident that the Australian version, produced by the very capable ITV Studios Australia, will engage and enthral Network Ten’s audiences”.

ITV Studios Australia’s chief executive, David Mott, meanwhile, noted that the “fantastic family-entertainment game show had a stellar run on ITV UK recently, achieving over four million viewers and dominating all demos”.
