Are Media appoints new editor to Gourmet Traveller
Are Media has appointed longtime News Corp luxury editor David Meagher as editor of its premium food and travel publication Gourmet Traveller.
Meagher was most recently managing editor of design publication The Local Project, and was previously the editor-in-chief of The Australian’s luxury publication Wish, a role he held for 15 years. He has also held senior positions at the AFR, and the Sydney Morning Herald, and is the author of four books.
At Are Media, Meagher will be tasked with leading Gourmet Traveller’s “next phase of brand evolution”, according to the company announcement. He will lead a seven-person editorial team, and report to Are Media’s general manager of luxury, Nicky Briger.
Meagher will work closely with Are Media’s broader luxury and travel teams to create new video and event offerings, as the magazine prepares for its 60th anniversary in 2026.
In the announcement, Meagher called it “a great honour” to be heading up “a brand I’ve long admired for its world-class storytelling and editorial connection with readers”.
He continued: “I look forward to working with the team to grow the brand’s omnichannel presence and to continue to inspire our audience through the lens of food, travel, people and luxury.”
Briger praised Meagher’s “deep editorial expertise, strong commercial sensibility, and passion for storytelling.” She said the publication’s 60th anniversary will see it focus on “ambitious growth, new formats, and premium audiences”.
“David will not only deliver on these focuses, but supercharge Gourmet Traveller’s next exiting stage of evolution.”
According to Roy Morgan, Gourmet Traveller reaches more than 450,000 Australians each month across print and digital.
Last month, Are Media confirmed it is actively looking for a new buyer.
The company is owned by the Sydney investment firm Mercury Capital, and publishes a number of the country’s most-read print titles, including Better Homes and Garden, Australian Women’s Weekly, Elle, Who, Women’s Day, New Idea, and TV Week.
