Arrival takes second spot from Hacksaw Ridge but Doctor Strange dominates weekend box office

New sci-fi film Arrival relegated the Mel Gibson war film Hacksaw Ridge to third spot at the box office, raking in $2.171m across its premiere weekend.

The film, which opened on November 10, features Amy Adams in a lead role about a group of investigators communicating with extraterrestrial visitors who have landed in spaceships across Earth.

Despite Arrival’s success, it could not dislodge Disney’s Dr Strange which achieved an additional $2.577m at box office. To date, Doctor Strange, has achieved a total of $16.058m earnings at the Australian box office.

Sliding to third spot Hacksaw Ridge achieved $1.318m in earnings over the weekend, bringing the film’s total to $3.653m across its two weeks of release.

American thriller The Accountant achieved $1.159m over the weekend following its first week of release.

The film, directed by Gavin O’Connor, tells the story of a high-functioning autistic accountant who makes his living by involving himself with organisations engaging in criminal and dangerous activities.

US thriller Nocturnal Animals, which premiered on Wednesday, collected $607,593 across its opening weekend, landed in fifth place at the box office.
