Australian Directors Guild announces new NSW and Queensland heads

The Australian Directors’ Guild has announced new heads for its New South Wales and Queensland chapter.

NEW ADG CHAPTER HEADS ANNOUNCED FOR NEW SOUTH WALES AND QUEENSLAND

The ADG today announced new chapter heads for New South Wales and Queensland.

Evan Clarry will be the new ADG Chapter Head for Queensland. The previous chapter head Sally McKenzie Has stepped down after many years of service to the ADG. The new Chapter Head for NSW will be Pearl Tan who taking over from Tony Davison.

Sally McKenzie said: “After 5 years as the Chapter Head in Queensland, I’m standing down and passing the baton to Evan Clarry. I’m soo glad that someone as capable as Evan has stepped up to the pitch. As for me, I have recently been awarded a Churchill Fellowship and am headed towards a big adventure.”

Evan Clarry’s career began with the short film Mate, which won Best Film at Flickerfest and Best Screenplay at the 1998 AFI Awards. His directing credits include the Australian feature films Blurred and Under the Radar, and the Emmy-nominated television series Mortified. Evan was a story developer, writer and director on three seasons of the international hit series Mako Mermaids and is a writer/director for the new series Bureau of Magical Things (2018).

“As a long-time member of the ADG, I am honoured to take on the role of the Queensland chapter head. I look forward to engaging with our local members and working together to bring about greater opportunity in fostering locally based storytelling,” Evan said.

Pearl Tan is a filmmaker, speaker, and presenter. She is the founder and director of Pearly Productions, a filmmaking boutique with a focus on diverse stories. Through Pearly Productions, she created the YouTube series Minority Box, directed feature film The Casting Game, and has directed / produced several short films and online content. She is currently the Senior Lecturer in Directing at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and she moonlights as a radio presenter for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Pearl has extensive experience in advocacy and governance. She was Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Equity Diversity Committee within the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA). She currently holds positions on the MEAA Board, the National Performers Committee (NPC) for Actors Equity, and the AFTRS Council. In 2017, she delivered a TEDx talk entitled Reimagining Diversity. In 2016, Pearl was named a Woman of Influence by the Australian Financial Review and Westpac.

The ADG has chapter heads in each state. The Chapter Heads are the local link with ADG members and are all directors who work primarily the state they head. The new Chapter Heads will join the other state chapter heads – CATHY HENKEL (WA), DAVE DE VRIES (SA), MARK POOLE (VIC) and LUCIEN SIMON (TAS).

“The strength of the ADG will always be its membership and the position of Chapter Head is an important one to keep in touch with our membership,” said Kingston Anderson CEO of the ADG. “We welcome Evan and Pearl and thank them for volunteering to represent the ADG membership in their state.”
