Australian Olympic Committee communications chief departs

The Australian Olympic Committee’s chief of communications and media is leaving the job after just ten months in the role.

Ellie Laing-Southwood joined the organisation in October, shortly after the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Mumbrella understands her role has been made redundant.

Aside from her role as the AOC’s communications chief, Laing-Southwood is also a board member of Sport NSW, and co-author of the children’s book Somebody’s Land, with former AFL star and Australian of the Year Adam Goodes.

Prior to this, she headed up communications at the Property Council of Australia for three years, was director of communications for the NSW deputy premier, and has worked as a reporter across Seven, Ten, SBS, and the ABC.

Laing-Southwood’s last day at the AOC is Friday, August 15.

The 2026 Winter Olympics take place next February in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, in Italy, and will be broadcast on Nine. More than fifty Australian athletes will compete in the games.

Nine’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics Games was viewed by more than 19.5 million Australians according to Oztam.
