Australian VR studio to launch project at SxSW festival next month

Sydney virtual reality studio Start VR will premiere their project ‘Awake’ at the annual South by Southwest conference and festival.

This March, Sydney virtual reality studio Start VR will premiere their original project Awake at the annual South by Southwest conference and festival. The genre-defying, interactive cinematic VR experience was created with financial partners Screen Australia and HTC VIVE, and co-produced with award-winning Sydney animation studio Animal Logic.

This character-driven interactive cinematic VR series draws you into an immersive, vivid amalgam of dreams and reality, examining the perplexities surrounding space, time and the human psyche in its most vulnerable state.

Jake McDorman is Harry, a misjudged, isolated man haunted by memories of his beloved wife Rose (Analeigh Tipton). Through spatial narrative, object interaction and exploration of realms beyond the physical, audiences uncover the mystery surrounding Harry’s past.

In Episode One, Harry is a prisoner in his own house, obsessed with discovering the truth behind a recurring dream of his long-lost wife Rose and a strange pattern that contains a cryptic message.

The concept for Awake was developed over several years by Start VR Chief Content Officer Martin Taylor. The comprehensive, volumetric VR narrative is emotionally transformative and compelling in a way that has never before been achieved in VR.

The project features creative input from the world-class Microsoft Mixed Reality Capture Studios, as well as Mike Jones (VR Noir, The Kettering Incident, Deadlock), and Christian Cantamessa (Red Dead Redemption, Shadow of Mordor, AIR). It is the melding of cutting edge VR technologies with complex, character driven story that pushes Awake into new and exciting cinematic territory.

Awake will be shown at the second annual Virtual Cinema: South by Southwest’s dedicated space for Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality storytelling. The experience is slated for public release late March.
