Australians announced as finalists in South by Southwest Interactive Awards

Four Australian content producers have been announced as finalists in the South by Southwest Interactive Awards, to be held in Texas. The Awards, part of the SXSW Interactive Festival and Conferences, highlight interactive and multimedia projects.
The announcement:
Four Australian creative content productions are announced as finalists in the prestigious South by Southwest Interactive Awards to be held in Austin, Texas March 11 at the conclusion of of the SXSW Interactive Festival and Conferences.  Listed below are innovative online productions from Australia that have been spotlighted at the world’s largest and most important Interactive Multimedia event in its 21st year.
 
An estimated 750 registered delegates will attend SXSW from Australia, and several are speakers on more than 800 panels.  Plus there are 55 top Australian bands playing in the SXSW Music Festival and eight acclaimed Australian films being exhibited in the SXSW Film Festival. 
 
SXSW IA attracts more than 35,000 paid delegates; SXSW Music draws 15,000+ industry professionals while SXSW Film adds 9000 registrants to the mix. The Music Festival has more than 2000 bands  showcasing in 110 venues from 8500 artists that applied from 55 countries, while the Film Festival shows more than 115 productions from over 2000 submitted in the juried competition.
 
The Interactive Awards highlight the coolest projects from the Interactive community, including mobile and tablet apps, platforms, games, kiosks/installations, digital campaigns, websites and more.  The full list of 75 finalists in 15 categories with all links are now up at the SXSW Interactive Awards site

In the category of Music — Projects related to musicians, bands, and the music industry, as well online radio and other developments that offer streaming audio content.
 
ACO VIRTUAL – Sydney, Australia
A creative collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, ACO VIRTUAL is a world-first interactive experience that lets the audience take control and play with the musicians. Produced by Mod Productions

In the category of ArtInteractive collections of life, society and culture
 
Ringbalin – River Stories – Glenside, Australia.  A multichannel geo-located documentary that invites you on a journey along Australia’s great Murray Darling Rivers, with Aboriginal Elders from the oldest cultures on earth acting as your guides. It contains dozens of traditional and personal stories and takes the form of a film, an iPad/iPhone App, and website. Produced by goodmorningbeautiful

In the category of Motion GraphicsAnimations, cartoons, and other intriguing works built using tools like Adobe Flash and HTML5.
 
Anytime.Anywhere.  Melbourne, Australia
Multichannel campaign  using interaction in film for attracting Air Force recruitment which started as cinema ads and morphed to full on interactive applications. Produced by George Patterson & Young and Rubicam

In the category of ActivismGreen, governmental and non-profit projects striving to make the world a better place
 
The Missing Person Pre Roll – Newtown, Australia
A You Tube and world first, in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police, it used the pre-roll seconds of You Tube startup time to display a geocentric message of a missing person with over 1.2 million views and 238 clicks of seeing the person giving leads and broadening the search for long term cold cases for the AFP.
 
INTERESTING FACTOID: 
 
There will be more Australians in in one place at one time in North America for the same event since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.  With more than 750 registrants plus the players and crews of 55 bands, it almost eclipses that event in terms of bodies. Over the past 28 years, SXSW has launched the careers overseas of several homegrown recording artists, film makers and interactive multimedia pioneers.
