Basil Zempilas headlines new Triple M Perth breakfast line up

Former 6PR host and Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas will front breakfast on Southern Cross Austereo’s newly launched Triple M 92.9 station in Perth.

Zempilas will be joined by ex-AFL player Xavier Ellis, most recently the co-host of the now-defunct Hit92.9 breakfast, as well as The West Australian’s assistant editor Jenna Clarke.

Nine Radio’s 6PR announced’s the departure of Zempilas in October, with the broadcaster also working as a senior sports presenter for Seven News and co-host of Weekend Sunrise.

He returns to the 92.9 frequency in Perth, after he spent six years hosting breakfast there, and hosted 6PR breakfast with Steve Mills since 2014.

Now Zempilas will headline the all-new breakfast show on Triple M, bringing his media expertise to the station, which SCA says will be Perth’s “first, true rock station”.

Zempilas said Triple M was the perfect fit for his experience and sporting background. “I love Perth, I love to have a laugh and I love sport – so when Triple M arrived, it was the perfect fit!

“I’m a local through and through, and the opportunity to take that even further with Triple M is really exciting – and I’m so thrilled to share the experience with Xav and Jenna.”

SCA chief content officer Dave Cameron said there is “no-one more Perth” than Basil Zempilas, and “having Baz be a part of launching 92.9 Triple M with a brand-new breakfast show in 2021, reinforces the fact that Triple M is out to cement itself, with local content delivered by local personalities just for local listeners.

“Baz combined with Eagles favourite and current 92.9 host Xavier Ellis, plus razor-sharp journalist Jenna Clarke make this a hugely exciting new local show, and we can’t wait to finally give listeners what’s long overdue at breakfast – something fresh and fun to wake up with. 92.9 Triple M has arrived – time to shake the city up a bit!”

Head of the Triple M Network Mike Fitzpatrick said the show is an alternative to every other breakfast offering airing in Perth next year.

“This will be an FM breakfast show that is different from everything else on the radio in Perth. It will give listeners a real alternative to the regular breakfast offering,” he said.

With the launch of Triple M Perth, national drive show Kennedy Molloy will air on the new station in 2021, having formerly been on Mix 94.5 which is now part of the Hit Network.
