Battleship leads Universal to top three box office spots, cinema revenue up 13% on 2011

Led by the opening of big budget flick Battleship, film distributor Universal made it three in a row at the Australian box office this week.

The distributor took the top three spots at the box office with Battleship, followed by American Pie: Reunion and Dr Suess’ The Lorax, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Directed by Peter Berg, Battleship took $3.9m at the box office across 369 screens for an average of $10,679.

The film stars Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker and is based on the board game, with US battleships fighting an alien invasion.

Last week’s top film, American Pie: Reunion was in second place and took $2.678m across 330 screens for an average of $8,116.

Third, also for Universal was Dr Suess’ The Lorax which took another $2.6m across 499 screens for an average of $5,222.

In fourth place was The Hunger Games, taking $2.26m, boosting its taking to $26m.

Hunger Games is the highest grossing film in Australia so far this year, according to a report from cinema ad network Val Morgan, which claims a strong first quarter for the cinema sector with a 13% increase in revenue on last year, for a total of $337m spent at the box office so far.

However, it was a quiet weekend for new releases, with Battleship the only major release.
