Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby to open Cannes film fesitival
After more than two years in gestation and a delayed release, Australian feature film The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann, will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 15.
The Great Gatsby, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Long Island-set novel, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and features Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Debicki, Jason Clarke and Jack Thompson.
“It’s an extraordinary accolade for Baz and his team to open the world’s premier film festival with The Great Gatsby,” said Screen Australia’s Chief Executive Ruth Harley.
Luhrmann, along with his wife and set designer Catherine Martin helmed the film, which was shot In Sydney and the Blue Mountains and was a major large-budget feature for Australia.
“CM and I give much thought to how valuable our longstanding and deep creative relationships in Australia are, from photography, acting, visual effects, production design and in every other aspect of the filmmaking process,” Luhrmann said.
“Possibly the greatest filmmaking asset Australia has is our crews and creative collaborators.”
