Big Bang prequel Young Sheldon premieres with 1.053m, while Spartan fizzles

The premiere of Young Sheldon on Nine last night topped the ratings ladder – and the key advertising demographic of 25 to 54s – with 1.053m metro viewers.

Young Sheldon proved a ratings winner for Nine

Over on Seven, the embattled Australian Spartan franchise slipped to 401,000 metro viewers – down from 473,000 on Sunday night – leaving the network in third place with a 15.3% share, behind Nine (20.5%) and ABC (16.4%).

Ten was in fourth place with a share of 13.2%, as the second episode of Bachelor in Paradise pulled 656,000 metro viewers, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings.

The episode was down on Sunday night’s debut of 750,000, but managed to top the 16 to 39s and 18 to 49s demographics with 323,000 and 434,000 viewers in the age brackets respectively.

The ABC, which placed second for the evening, had a number of steady-rating shows including ABC News (778,000), Four Corners (735,000), Australian Story (720,000), 7.30 (666,000) and Media Watch (626,000).

The overall news battle, however, was won by Seven, with Seven News drawing in 1.001m viewers, ahead of Nine’s 915,000. Ten Eye Witness News, which screens at 5:00pm, rather than 6:00pm as on the other commercial networks, had 467,000.

SBS had a 5.7% main channel share.

On a network basis, including the multi-channels, Nine Network still won the night, with a 27.7% share, however Seven climbed the second with 24.7%. ABC slipped to third with 21.0% network share, while Ten remained in fourth with 18.6%. SBS Network had 8.1%.

The ratings season is currently on a two-week break for Easter, with official ratings recommencing on 8 April.
