Birdman named Best Picture at Oscars but Fifty Shades of Grey continues to dominate box office
The Oscar winner for Best Picture Birdman pulled in $188,643 over the weekend, taking the film’s total Australian box office takings to $5.394m, as Fifty Shades of Grey dominated the weekend box office for the second weekend in a row.
Birdman, which stars Michael Keaton as former cinema superhero Riggan Thomson who mounts an ambitious Broadway production that he hopes will breathe new life into his stagnant career, also picked up the Oscar for best director, best original screenplay and best cinematography.
Fifty Shades of Grey grabbed $3.984m across 545 screens over the weekend. The film has made a total of $17.264m in Australia since launching ten days ago.
Kingsman: The Secret Service nabbed third place on the weekend rankings after making $2.201m while Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis, made $2.018m across 415 screens.
American Sniper rounded out the top five, grabbing $926,237 across 305 screens to take its total Aussie box office to $17.618m. It won the Oscar for best sound editing.
The Theory of Everything, which won Eddie Redmayne won the Oscar for best actor, pulled in $480,154, takings it total box office takings to $4.836m. Julianne Moore took home the best actress gong for Still Alice which made $193,337 at the local box office over the weekend.
Disney animation Big Hero 6 was named the best animated feature at the Oscars, and it took home $87,809 across 91 screens to take its total Australian box office to $21.642m.
The Oscar for best adapted screenplay went to The Imitation Game which pulled in $292,279 in tickets over the weekend. To date the film has made $17.592m.
Selma pulled in $281,296 across 110 screens over the weekend and saw its song Glory recognised as the best original song at the Oscars.

I don’t get it. The3 story was 50 Shades of Grey made it because woman were read it on Ipads without anyone knowing what they were reading. Now everyone’s flocking to see it, in public! Huh?
