Box office: The Rock cooks up an early Christmas for cinema-goers

Christmas arrived in cinemas early this year, with over a quarter of this weekend’s box office takings being for holiday flick, Red One, starring Chris Evans and The Rock.

The film took $2.05 million in its opening weekend according to HOYTS, ahead of Venom: The Last Dance, which added $1.64 million to a box office that has now surpassed $11 million.

Horror film, Smile 2, has survived Halloween to continue drawing crowds at the box office, bringing in $567,000 to bring its local box office takings to $5.6 million. Kate Winslet’s Lee took $521,000 in its third week.

Purma Bahadur Ko Sarangi took $317,000 in its opening weekend; one of four ‘world movies’ to occupy the top 10 this week.

The Wild Robot took $298,000 to push its box office over $16 million, after two months.

All in their second weekends, Hindi movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 took in $276,000, Singham Again added $227,000 to bring its fortnight total to $1.16 million, and Amaran took $117,000.

The AI-assisted Tom Hanks, Robin Wright movie, Here, took $132,000 to bring its total to $500,000.
