Brisbane new permanent home for Asia Pacific Screen Awards

Brisbane has become the new permanent home for the Asia Pacific Screen Awards after the city’s Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, announced $1.75m of financial support for the event.

Quirk made the announcement today in Brisbane, saying the awards have permanently moved from their original location on the Gold Coast.

He said: “Our decision to manage these prestigious awards and secure its international secretariat and academy is about positioning Brisbane for business opportunities while continuing to foster cultural relationships with our regional neighbours.

“It is also about reading the economic signs: Asia Pacific is the economic powerhouse of the world and it is important for our future that we claim our slice of the pie.

“Hosting APSA strengthens Brisbane’s proposition as the new world city, not just of Australia, but of the Asia Pacific. “APSA complements the Asia Pacific Cities Summit, the Australian Performing Arts Market and the Asia Pacific Triennial.”

Brisbane’s three year funding commitment includes $1.75 million in the first year.

The APSA was started in 2007 and was hosted on the Gold Coast until last year. Australian films like Bran Nue Dae have received accolades at the awards.
