Business Spectator founder Alan Kohler launches new investment news website

Business Spectator founder Alan Kohler is diving back into the world of finance publishing with the launch of The Constant Investor which will bring his overview of the week in finance to readers alongside a new podcast and video content.

Speaking with Mumbrella, Kohler said The Constant Investor is targeted at investors but is “also for anyone else interested in the world of money and economics”.

The new publication will bring readers Kohler’s weekly financial overview, familiar to readers of The Eureka Report – a podcast based on Kohler’s now-closed ABC program Inside Business – and access to a private Facebook group.

“I’ll be using that to interact with them, answer questions, do some Facebook live streams and discuss any major events that are going. Members can use the group to interact with each other,” Kohler explained.

Kohler was involved in launching The Eureka Report and then the Business Spectator, selling both businesses to News Corp in 2012. News Corp then sold The Eureka Report to Australasian Wealth Investments in March this year.

The new venture is based on a subscription revenue model, with readers able to access the three core parts of The Constant Investor for $25 a month.

When asked if it will be supported with any advertising, Kohler was adamant there will be “no advertising at all”.

“My view is you have to decide what business you’re in: subscriptions or advertising. It’s very difficult to do both,” he said.

According to Kohler, The Constant Investor cuts through the competitive investor-business news space by being a voice that sorts through the noise.

“It is competitive; there is so much analysis, news and commentary about economics and business which, in a way, is an advantage for me. What I try to do, and what I do, is to summarise it and distill what is going on,” he said.

“What a lot of people have found over the years is they only need to read my overview on Saturday mornings and they’re up to date with what’s going on. The more noise there is, the more volume of coverage there is in any area, the more need there is to sort it out, and that’s what I do.”

The Constant Investor launches July 16.
