Celestial inspiration for McCanns ad for jeweller
Sydney-based ad agency McCann created this tactical ad for client Michael Hill Jeweller following this week’s solar eclipse witnessed across much of Asia.
The burst of light featured in the image is known as a diamond ring.
The ad features on the back page of today’s The Australian newspaper and on News Ltd online properties.

Wow, hope they got their money’s worth from the “copywriter”.

Excellent thinking and class execution.
Aussie agencies are getting into gear (pun intended…)

Classic case of been there, done that. I don’t think this creative would justify the agencies getting creative …

Like it! Very AWARD School, but a good idea is a good idea

I’m not sure about celestial inspiration. It’s a great ad but it reminds me an awful lot of the logo for the tv show heroes.
If you go here:

I’ve uploaded an image. Image 1 is the heroes logo. Then I’ve cut out the michael hill
eclipse and put it on top of the heroes logo at 50% transparency. In the final image it’s covering it 100%. I have scaled (not transformed) and rotate the michael hill image.
It must be said it is a perfect circle so and there are only so many ways to depict an eclipse but from a branding perspective my initial reaction was that it reminded me of something else.

@ Billy C, I am positive of the feeling of seeing it somewhere else. I think it must have been in one of the fashion glossies for a jewellry brand I had come across in the Middle East …

I detest this sort of thing. It’s what gives advertising such a bad name. The theft of classical music, historic images, famous sayings and natural beauty: it’s no less than cultural destruction.
