David Droga: Advertising has gone Hollywood
The ad industry has “gone Hollywood” and lost sight of the fact that the best advertising ideas come from everyday life, David Droga has warned.
Speaking in a video interview with Cannes Lions TV uploaded this week, the Australian-born founder of Droga 5 said: “The best ideas really are grounded in the everyday. And I think as an industry we’ve got so obsessed, we’ve gone so Hollywood that we got removed from the everyday.”
He added: “The most inspiriing things out there, the actual idea is really simple. I’m not afraid of the obvious.”
The video interview also featured Craig Davis, co-chairman of Publicis Mojo. He said: “People need to remain constantly, insatiably curious.”
Both men have been presidents of Cannes Lions juries.

With Hollywood heavy weight companies like Ridley Scott’s RSA and Digital Domain opening their own agencies, Little Minx & Mothership respectively, one thinks there is more Hollywood in advertising yet to come!!

So Droga’s most famous and recent piece of work featured Sarah Silverman? Is that no longer relevant? Is he saying it didn’t connect with people?
And Droga 5’s local biggest work features a cast of thousands and celebrities.
I’m confused.

Was that Craig talking, or just his hands?
Liked the truth & lie answer though – who’d have thought he fancied David enough to fess up on camera?

Maybe this will help Groucho.
Who do you think recommended Craig for the JWT role?
