DDB Sydney turns McDonald’s maroon and blue in State of Origin campaign

DDB Sydney has launched a new campaign for McDonald’s Australia in time for the State of Origin Series, celebrating both sides of the rugby league tournament.

The campaign features separate films for New South Wales and Queensland, starring a handful of rugby league players.

The NSW film features Nathan Cleary, Brian To’o, Isaah Yeo and Millie Boyle, representing fans who have supported their team for life, and highlights the fans who don their blue wigs on game day.

The Queensland counterpart stars Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Patrick Carrigan and Valentine Holmes, with the film leaning into the face painting of team colours and wearing a rugby jersey to a first date.

The campaign’s out of home creative touts the pre- or post-game feeds at McDonald’s while also celebrating fan behaviours unique to both states. It will run across TV, OOH, social, broadcast integration, radio and CRM.

“Macca’s is as mad about footy as the two states involved in Origin, so these spots show just how much NSW and QLD are lovin’ the game,” DDB Sydney creatives Patrick Allenby and Nick Cole said.

McDonald’s Australia marketing director Amanda Nakad said: “There’s a real magic in the air on Origin night, and it’s the love of footy.”

“Given how much Macca’s loves footy, expressed through our New South Wales and Queensland Rugby League partnerships, we wanted to celebrate the game and its fans on one of the biggest nights of the rugby league calendar.”
