Dentsu moving to Cremorne from ancestral home in South Melbourne
Dentsu is shifting from its South Melbourne head office on York St, to a new base in Cremorne, Mumbrella can reveal.
The holding group is set to move its 430 Melbourne-based staff in the middle of this year as an “important step in the evolution of Dentsu ANZ”, CEO Angela Tangas told Mumbrella as it looks to enhance collaboration across the group.
“The new office location will enable never before radical collaboration with a customised fit out that encourages integrated teaming, inspires creativity everywhere and is a place, most importantly, where our people want to be.”
It is understood the new space will be a converted warehouse in Cremorne, the inner-city suburb which is home to many of Melbourne’s marketing and advertising set-ups, including Akcelo, Shadowboxer, The Royals, Bastion, and Wunderman Thompson, as well as MYOB, CarSales and more.
The group has a storied history in South Melbourne, with Mitchell & Partners founded in the bayside suburb in 1976 before becoming the nation’s largest independent media agency, led by Harold Mitchell. The current property, Emerald House was built in 2010 for Mitchell Communications Group.
Mitchell’s was then acquired by Aegis Network, then purchased by the Japanese group in 2013 before Mitchell retired. The group has been based there since.
Tangas, the national boss of Dentsu remains based in Melbourne, one of the few group CEOs based outside of Sydney. Both Sue Squillace and Kirsty Muddle, media and creative CEOs are Sydney-based.
Dentsu is the second advertising group in recent weeks to be on the move with Omnicom subsidiaries Clemenger Group and Omnicom Media Group set to move to a new CBD base in 2023/2024.

Where your people want to be is at home. At least 3 days a week. I don’t care how nice the office is, as soon as my boss mandates a return to the office, i’m moving to a new workplace that gives me flexibility.

Dentsu can bring a lot of great diversity and sustainability policies to the area. You can remain focused on doing the great work that clients actually want while stealing any decent talent that’s left.
