Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney launches Sydney Doesn’t Suck campaign advocating for plastic straws ban
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney and deputy chair of the Environmental Committee, Jess Miller, has launched a campaign to promote the banning of plastic straws.
Miller said the campaign would promote entertainment venues who are taking positive steps, and help punters who don’t want to use “turtle-choking-seal-killers” when they have a night out.
“Every piece of plastic that was ever created, still exists. When it comes to straws, Australians use around 3.6 billion of these little turtle-choking-seal-killers each year. #SydneyDoesntSuck is an umbrella campaign to draw attention to the great work that Sydney’s best bars, hospitality and entertainment venues are doing to limit their use of single-use plastic straws only to people that really need them,” she said.
“#SydneyDoesntSuck helps punters who want to find venues who are dealing with Australia’s daily 10 million straw habit, find them by searching the hashtag and supports venues looking to
supply better alternatives and limit their use only to people who really need them.”
Nick Hunter, creative director at Paper Moose, said: “As this is a behaviour change campaign we decided to use the mechanic of showing how unacceptable it is to use single use plastic straws when you order a drink, and encourage people and bar owners to think again about asking for them.”

That cat was doing a pretty poor impersonation of a seal

We don’t have a plastic straw or bag problem. We have a waste management problem. If everyone dispose their waste accordingly and having the councils doing the right thing then all these plastics will not be ended up in our oceans or being a death traps for wildlives.

How do they expect disabled people to drink?
Let’s just guilt shame people using plastic. Couldn’t they have found a better more engaging way?
Also, why is the Cr starring in the ad as the seal?
How about advocating for paper straws that degrade by giving the user a better alternative rather than guilt shaming them – cos that’ll work.
