Digital channels spread the audience for free to air TV

Lacklustre ratings across the board failed to make any channel a definitive winner on Sunday night as the audience spread across the five prime channels and onto the digital channels too.

Typical was the 8.30pm slot with Ten’s Hawaii Five-O beginning to splutter on 827,000, 15th for the night, but just ahead of Nine’s The Mentalist on 809,000.

For Seven, Bones fared slightly better with the only show in the timeslot to rate more than 1m, while the audience also spread over to ABC1 where Agatha Christie’s Poirot delivered 883,000, according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam.

Seven was the only network to get more than a 20% share to its primary channel.

For SBS1, the first in the new series of Dateline failed to hit the 3-400,000 audience executive producer Peter Charley told Mumbrella he was aiming for. It did not make the top 50 shows of Sunday, rating147,000 – well below last year’s series average of 282,000.

It was also beaten in the 8.30 slot by content on the digital channels including The Big Bang Theory on Go (309,000), Escape To The Country (240,000) on 7Two and Gone In 60 Seconds (249,000) on 7Mate.

The best performing entertainment show of the night was The Force – Behind The Line on Seven at 8pm. Seven News was the most viewed program of the evening.
