Disney+ raises subscription price in Australia; ad-supported tier launches in US

From today, the monthly Disney+ subscription will increase from $11.99 to $13.99 in Australia, while its ad-supported tier, Disney+ Basic, has also launched in the US.

The annual price of Disney+ subscription consequently increased from $119.99 to $139.99.

The introduction of Disney+ Basic in the US follows the company’s plan announced earlier this year, which said the ad-supported subscription offering will land globally in 2023.

According to a US pitch deck seen by Business Insider, Disney’s pitch to advertisers revolves around its popular content, broad reach, and light ad experience that won’t annoy viewers.

Ads are sold both directly and programmatically, in 15 and 30 seconds non-skippable ads, with frequency caps.

Disney already owns two advertising-supported platforms, Hulu and ESPN+, but neither is available in Australia.

Mumbrella reached out to Disney Australia and New Zealand for local perspectives.

The platform announced the first wave of commissions and acquisitions with nine Australian originals in May.
