DR MUMBO: 2009 Aussie viral videos much like 2008 – they still suck

It’s tough doing viral marketing. If you don’t do it, you get criticised for being old school. But if you do, the law of averages says it’s probably going to be dreadful. And all the good ideas seem to have been taken anyway. Or so the latest work for Tourism Queensland would seem to suggest.

The early applications for “the best job in the world“, as caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef do seem just a tad fake. And not entirely original as an idea either. (Spotter: twitter.com/morgwn)

(Update: Admitttedly as a PR campaign, project has a good claim to be working. Overnight  Dr Mumbo happened to catch an interview on the subject on the early breakfast program of the UK’s national news station BBC 5 Live. Unfortunately the interviewee from Tourism Queensland asked listeners for 60 minute rather than 60 second application videos. There’s also a piece in the Oz today.)

Meanwhile U Bank is back on the social media pony after their calamitous fake first effort. This time they’ve got the strategy right, but unfortunately it’s not actually funny. (Spotter: Julian Cole)

Got a brand? Need a really, really bad dancer to help advertise your product? Then Dr Mumbo knows just the man… (Spotter: Media Bistro’s Agency Spy)
