Journalist Ellen Fanning will be filling in as presenter of RN Breakfast after Fran Kelly moved to become host of Insiders on ABC TV from April 27 as Barrie Cassidy takes long service leave.

Fanning will join RN Breakfast from April 22, with RN Breakfast reporter James Carleton to take over the presenting duties on June 9.

In a statement Fanning said: “I have had a long history with the ABC. It is great to be back, especially to be fronting such a significant morning program. I have enormous respect for Fran Kelly and RN, and am excited to be joining the show.”

Previously Fanning has been host of ABC Radio national current affair program PM, ABC’s Washington correspondent, reporter on 60 Minutes and presenter of the Sunday program on Channel Nine and a columnist for The Bulletin.

More recently she was the presenter of SBS TV’s long form interview series The Observer Effect, which was axed last year due to a poor rating’s performance.

RN’s acting manager Deborah Leavitt said: “It was hard to find the right person to present RN Breakfast, but with Ellen in the chair, expect the same hard-hitting journalism from RN’s breakfast program. Ellen’s wealth of experience and her solid reputation as a current affairs journalist will be right at home at RN.”

In June RN reporter James Carleton will take over the presenting role from Fanning, sitting in the host role until August 4.

Carleton has been with the program for the past seven years and has also reported for ABC TV’s 7:30 and written for The Sydney Morning Herald.

Fran Kelly will return as host of RN Breakfast after completing her stint as Insiders host while Barrie Cassidy is on long service leave to write a book.
