The Emoji Movie fails to knock IT off top spot at weekend box office

Warner Bros’ horror movie IT again won the weekend box office as it collected $4.991m across 446 screens at the weekend box office, beating The Emoji Movie, Victoria and Abdul, American Assassin and Mother!, which all premiered at weekend box office.

In the film’s first week it made more than $7m across 548 screens, grossing six times its nearest competitor, Hitman’s Bodyguard.

This week the race was a little tighter, with the premiere of The Emoji Movie landing second place over the weekend, with earnings of $2.040m across 328 screens.

The film tells the story of an emoji called Gene, who can make multiple facial expressions unlike other Emojis. Determined to be normal, he enlsits the help of his best friend Hi-5 and a code breaker called Jailbreak.

Universal’s Victoria and Abdul placed third in its first weekend at box office, grossing $1.888m.

The film is based around a young clerk who arrives from India to participate in the Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The duo forge an unlikely friendship.

It beat American Assassin – an Roadshow action film about a CIA black ops recruit called Mitch Rapp, and cold war veteran Stan Hurley who are asked to investigate attacks on both military and civilian targets.

The film made $1.223m on its first weekend, across 232 screens, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Paramount’s drama film Mother! ranked fifth in its debut weekend, earning $697,113.

The film, featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer is based on the story of a couple’s relationship which is disrupted when their uninvited guests arrive at their home.
