Entire school takes on Aussie cricket team in Vodafone ad
Vodafone has launched a new Ashes ad campaign pitting an entire school against the Australian cricket team.
The “practice match” campaign, developed by Host, will run throughout the series. As well members of the Australian team, it features 250 school children aged from nine to 11.
The children did not know they would be playing the Aussie cricket team until they arrived for the shoot.
Amanda Quested, Host’s head of project management, said “Vodafone took a gamble in allowing us to film elements of this campaign essentially without a script. We wanted to allow spontaneity between the kids and the players, we feel we’ve captured something that no script ever could.”
There will also be other TV executions featuring players such as Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey answering customer requests and questions.

Great idea, great execution and props to Vodafone for going with it. This is the kind of ads consumers love.

“One hand, one bounce” Love it!

Like it, but really, no script? The comment about Ponting and the kid’s mum seems pretty forced, as do other bits.
Not complaining, the end product is great – but it feels pretty artificial at times.

Fantastic! Wonderful! Full of life and fun. Now… what are Vodafone selling again?

Cute idea, ruined by the scripting. The problem is 250 non-professional actors would give you nothing you could use other than squealing and idiocy if they weren’t following a script.

Finally an ad featuring cricketers that doesn’t completely s**k.

Those cricketers will do anything for an extra buck wont they? I quite liked the execution. Voicework i think Vodafone are “bringing people together” just like t mobile et al.

What can I say? They need the practice before the Ashes:)

The big O would be turning in his grave on hearing that. Nice ad shame about the total annihilation of a classic song

JK’s right – you took one of my best songs and monkeyt-fucked it.
But I asked around and both Hendrix and Bradman agree that the rest of the ad is pretty good.

Hi Evan,
I’m did not mean to imply shock that they would create an ad without a script, I was referring to the claim in the article “Vodafone took a gamble in allowing us to film elements of this campaign essentially without a script.”
I’m just saying that most parts seem pretty controlled, and it doesn’t feel unscripted. Maybe the extra content from the game that will run will be more like this, and regardless, I still think it’s a great piece.

I watched this on the first page and said – what a great ad – and then thought, let me read the comments – I’m sure the head-up-their bum media- type mumbrella readers will try to bring it down
of course it’s bloody scripted in parts – is it so hard to give someone in this industry some credit where it’s due??
Kudos to those who have done so.

Got ya Warlach…
Just used to people really taking apart every little thing on this site just so they have something they believe is relevant to say for the day. Now however I can definitely appreciate where you are coming from with your first comment
