Entries for Five Decades of Advertising Graduates competition now open

As advertising education in Australia marks 50 years, the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has announced that the ‘Five Decades of Advertising Graduates’ competition is now open for applications.

The competition is a celebration of how studying for and working in the advertising industry has developed over five decades.

In addition to looking at changes and staple trends, the initiative aims to showcase how advertising graduates have profited from their education – in life and their careers – and the impact they’ve had.

“For half a century, the Australian advertising industry has been influenced by the ingenuity and creativity of its graduates,” Leigh Terry, project co-leader and CEO of IPG Mediabrands APAC, said.

“It’s high time we honor and highlight the significant impact these advertising pioneers have had on our industry.”

Now that entries have opened, QUT has shared the selection criterion and process for entering.

The university is looking for applications who “have studied an advertising major (not a minor) at an Australian university,”, on top of having a minimum of five-years credible work experience within the industry.

On their application, hopeful winners are being asked “to list three career highlights”, and provide a summary of how they leveraged their university degrees to influence society and the advertising industry.

“Applicants must choose which of the five decades they graduated in: 1974-83; 1984-93;1994-03; 2004-13; 2014-23,” the announcement reads.

The judging process can be split into two stages. Stage one will see “five entries from each decade … [being] shortlisted”; stage two will have applications judged under a panel comprised of “industry leaders and advertising academics” who will choose a winner for each decade.

Final winners are expected to be chosen mid-year.

Competition winners will be honoured with an award; they’ll also be given an opportunity to share their story to provide a timeline capturing advertising education’s growth and the transformational opportunities it has supplied the industry with in the past 50 years.

Professor Gayle Kerr at QUT’s School of Advertising, Marketing & PR shared her excitement on the competition.

“We are proud of the achievements of our advertising graduates and celebrate the degree of difference they have made to the advertising industry and to the wider community,” Professor Kerr said.

“Here’s to the next 50 years!”

Entries for the Five Decades of Advertising Graduates competition will close on April 29.
