Entries open for the Freelance Journalist of the Year Award

Entries have opened for the Freelance Journalist of the Year Award.

The announcement:

Freelancers from Australia and New Zealand are invited to submit their best work published or broadcast between March 8, 2012 and June 3, 2013 for the Freelance Journalist of the Year Award – an initiative of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance and Walkley Foundation for Journalism.

The winner will receive $3000 cash, $500 worth of Walkley professional development training and/or conference attendance and two tickets to the prestigious 58th Walkley Awards gala dinner in Brisbane.

Finalists will be chosen on the basis of journalistic excellence in a body of work (up to five pieces) published or broadcast in any medium. Works may include submissions from one medium or any combination of print articles, camerawork, radio broadcast or on-line work, including blogs, social media and podcasts.

Judges will consider resources available and effort expended in the preparation of the work. In general, judges will be looking for newsworthiness; research; writing; production; incisiveness; impact; public benefit; ethics; originality; innovation; and creative flair.

The winner will be announced on Friday August 9, 2013 at the Freelance Convention at Storyology: Ideas write now! – The Walkley Foundation’s annual media conference in Sydney (August 6-9). All entrants will receive an invitation to attend the announcement.

Last year, Dave Tacon’s dispatches from difficult locations across the planet landed him the inaugural award for articles on subjects ranging from the vibrant Beirut art scene to scavenging in Jakarta and street crime in Port Moresby, published in Rolling Stone and Monument magazines.

“Dave Tacon reported from three difficult-to-work-in locations with flair and vigour,” judges said. “The Jakarta and Port Moresby stories were particularly strong and newsworthy, told with empathy and passion. It was versatile freelance journalism at its best.”

Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance federal secretary Christopher Warren encouraged as many freelance journalists as possible to submit entries to the 2013 award.

Warren said the Media Alliance recently introduced a new suite of professional services for freelance journalist members, Freelance Pro, in recognition of their unique role in the profession.

“Freelance journalists are a growing and integral part of the profession in Australia and it is important their excellent work is recognised and highlighted,” Warren said.

Entries close 5.00pm Monday June 3, 2013. Finalists will be announced on Wednesday July 10, 2013
