Everest hits the heights on opening weekend as Australian movie Oddball goes close to $1m

Heavily-promoted mountaineering drama Everest took more than $3.2m at the box office on its opening weekend, knocking The Maze Runner into second place.

The movie, which stars Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley Sam Worthington and Jake Gyllenhaal, was shown across 517 screens with the second instalment of The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, managing $2.45m on 382 screens.

The Maze Runner took $3.56m on its opening weekend.

Adam Sandler film, Pixels, again cracked $1.5m million to be the third most popular film of the weekend, with total box office takings now more than $4m.

The biopic of hip hop group NWA, Straight Outta Compton, took $1.2m across 273 screens which saw the movie break the $10m barrier in box office takings since opening.

Australian movie Oddball, meanwhile, which tells the story of a dog which protects a colony of Little Penguins, took $985,000 on its debut weekend with the movie showing on 289 screens.

Drug thriller Sicario, which played on 188 screens, took $407,000 on its opening weekend.
