Ex Fairfax CMO Michael Laxton joins Coles as GM of brand and media

Fairfax Media’s former marketing boss, Michael Laxton, will join Coles as general manager of brand and media, Mumbrella can reveal.

In his new role, Laxton will report to newly appointed CMO, Lisa Ronson, when she arrives to the business in March. Ronson, who is currently CMO of Tourism Australia, announced her departure earlier this month.

Laxton joins Coles next week

Laxton left Fairfax, which is now owned by Nine, in August last year, after four years with the business.

In his time with Fairfax Media, Laxton held roles including director of digital marketing and SEO for news publishing, Life Media and Fairfax Events, as well as director of customer marketing and growth for the metro titles – The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. He was appointed as Fairfax Media’s first CMO in 2017.

Prior to being with the publisher, Laxton spent time at businesses including General Pants, Warner Music Group and Virgin.

Laxton told Mumbrella he was excited to be joining one of Australia’s most iconic and trusted brands.

“I’m really passionate about the Coles objective of making life easier for customers, and it’s every marketer’s dream to help do this in the millions of interactions Coles has with its customers every day,” he said.

Laxton commences his new role next Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Coles told Mumbrella: “We are really looking forward to having Michael join the team as we continue the focus on making life easier for our customers.”
