Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw takes over $7m across weekend box office

After three weeks in the top spot, The Lion King has been toppled by Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, the latest movie in the Fast & Furious franchise. The movie took $7.24m across its first weekend in the Australian box office, showing across 296 screens.

The film, which is the ninth in the Fast & Furious franchise and the first spin-off, stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as Hobbs and Shaw, characters from the original film series, who are forced to team up against a common enemy.

The Lion King, a live-action remake of the 1994 animated classic, still took a further $6.33m across 604 screens for its fourth weekend, adding to a total of $49.7m at the Australian box office.

Spider-Man: Far From Home took the third spot, with its sixth week delivering $667,486 across 339 screens for a rolling total of $36.18m, while Toy Story 4 added $510,083 to its total of $39.92m.

Beatles-themed comedy Yesterday held onto fifth spot, sitting above The Keeper and Chal Mera Putt. They were followed by The Secret Life of Pets 2, which took a further $162,039 for its seventh week.

French thriller Who You Think I Am, starring Juliette Binoche and directed by Safy Nebbou, brought in $129,518 across just 19 screens for its first weekend, and Universal’s The White Crow held 10th spot with a total of $102,220 for the week.
