Filming to start this week for Strangerland

Australian film Strangerland will start filming this week across various locations in NSW. The mystery drama, directed by Kim Farrant, stars Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving.

The announcement:

Filming begins this week in Sydney, Broken Hill and Canowindra on the new Australian feature film STRANGERLAND, to be directed by Kim Farrant.

Returning home to star in STRANGERLAND is internationally celebrated and Academy Award® winning Australian actress Nicole Kidman.  She is joined in the stellar cast by British actor Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love, Hercules) and Australia’s Hugo Weaving (Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Cloud Atlas).

STRANGERLAND is a compelling mystery drama about a couple (played by Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes) whose lives unravel after their two teenage children go missing in the harsh Australian desert. Hugo Weaving plays the policeman leading the investigation.

Other cast include Lisa Flanagan, Meyne Wyatt, Nicholas Hamilton and, in her first major acting role, modeling sensation Maddison Brown.

Nicole Kidman said, “I am always looking for the right script to bring me home to Australia.  The moment I read STRANGERLAND I knew this was a film I couldn’t say no to. I’m looking forward to working on a film in Australia and I’m very excited to be working with Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving.”

The film is written by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinirons and is produced by Naomi Wenck (Dragonfly Pictures) and Macdara Kelleher (Fastnet Films). Worldview Entertainment’s Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners, Maria Cestone, Sarah E. Johnson are executive producing alongside Andrew Mackie and Richard Payten.  Transmission Films is the Australian and New Zealand distributor with Wild Bunch taking international rights. Worldview Entertainment is financing and executive producing with Screen Australia, Screen NSW and the Irish Film Board making investments in the film.

Worldview’s Christopher Woodrow said,  “STRANGERLAND is a powerful story with a stellar cast and we are excited to start filming this week.  We are proud to have this on our 2014 slate and are already looking forward to its release.”

Andrew Mackie from Transmission Films said,  “It is thrilling to have Nicole Kidman appearing in her first independent film to be shot here in her home country since Dead Calm and to have such fine actors as Hugo Weaving and Joseph Fiennes also taking central roles. Attracting such an A-list cast is a testament to the film’s gripping and beautifully written script, the creative vision of our director Kim Farrant and the passion and determination of producers Naomi Wenck and Macdara Kelleher.  Transmission Films is very proud to be the domestic distributor.”

STRANGERLAND, an Australian/Irish co-production, is the first feature by director Kim Farrant, who has previously directed TV drama including Rush and the powerful documentary Naked on the Inside.

Producers Naomi Wenck (Dragonfly Pictures – Australia) and Macdara Kelleher (Fastnet Films – Ireland) said that filming will begin in Sydney in late March before moving to the NSW towns of Canowindra and Broken Hill.
