This is a complaint about promotion of EXIT’s campaign to legalise assisted suicide on Gruen Transfer 29/9/10. We have a right to expect balance and objectivity in such a presentation. However it was totally one-sided, and based on emotional hype, not on factual evidence. Euthanasia is not about a personal “choice”, but impacts society as a whole.
There is abundant evidence from countries where euthanasia has been legalised that, despite safeguards, “voluntary” euthanasia is far from voluntary. Killing of patients without their consent has “become more or less routine”, according to a government study in the Netherlands.
Great strides in palliative medicine have made it possible to control virtually any form pain. Government legislation should be directed, not to killing, but to bringing the benefits of modern science within the reach of all patients who undergo suffering
