Former Fairfax exec Sean Aylmer joins PR firm Res Publica as partner

Consumer and corporate PR firm Res Publica has hired the former editorial director of Fairfax Media, Sean Aylmer as a partner.

Aylmer resigned from Fairfax in October last year after 20 years with the company.

Aylmer has joined the PR agency as a partner.

“Having worked as a senior executive, I know the value of having quality counsel. I’m looking forward to drawing upon my combined experience in journalism and leadership roles. Res Publica is a well-established and respected consultancy, known for establishing long-term relationships with its clients by delivering high-quality senior counsel,” Aylmer said in a statement.

Since resigning from Fairfax, Aylmer – who oversaw the company’s restructure – has revealed he believes the revenue models of Fairfax, News Corp and the free-to-air TV networks are broken.

Aylmer also labelled journalists are “a miserable bunch” who are “insecure”.

Gabriel McDowell, executive chairman at Res Publica, said Aylmer is a “key addition” to the team.

“Sean’s expertise in Australian financial and news media is unparalleled, and his networks throughout the regulatory, corporate and media communities will be of immense benefit to our clients.

“No one better understands the forces at work in today’s commercial environment and the dynamics that drive the media agenda,” McDowell added.

In other appointments for the agency, James Tait has been hired as managing partner; ex-Lion marketer, Ogilvy PR and Accenture management consultant, Aleks Rzadkowski started at Res Publica as a partner of creative and strategy and Nathan Quigley, the former NSW National Party Director has also commenced with the agency as the director of corporate.

Res Publica’s current clients include AANA, Aged Care Guild, Allied Pinnacle, Quantium, Lion, Pepsi Co. and Woolworths.
