Foxtel to remove music channels

Foxtel’s music channels will be removed from the service at the end of this month, with the Paramount-owned MTV Hits, Nick Music, MTV Club, and MTV 80s all exiting the platform.

This leaves only the four Vevo channels — Vevo Pop, Vevo 2K, Vevo 90s, and Vevo Retro Rock — available via Foxtel’s internet-based linear service, and marks a further shift away from video-based music channels on the platform.

In June 2020, Foxtel discontinued its in-house music channels, Music Max, CMC, Channel V, and Smooth — the latter co-produced with the Nova radio station of the same time — after striking a deal with ViacomCBS (now Paramount Australia) to feature the MTV and Nickelodeon music channels on the service.

The MTV channels will be exited Foxtel this month.

Foxtel’s in-house music stations birthed the careers of numerous household names, including Osher Gunsberg, Yumi Stymes, James Kerley, Maya Jupiter, Andrew Mercado, and Chloe Maxwell. Channel V had been running for 25 years at the time of its cancellation.

A Foxtel spokesperson confirmed to Mumbrella the Paramount music channels will be leaving at the end of June, but added: “We look forward to sharing more information soon on new music video channels coming to Foxtel.”

For Australian MTV fans, Paramount’s Pluto TV BVOD offering includes a suite of MTV channels, including MTV Retro and MTV Biggest Pop.

Mumbrella has contacted Paramount Australia to see if MTV Hits, Nick Music, MTV Club, and MTV 80s will join the Pluto and 10Play platforms.
