Future filmmaker wins scholarship to International Film School Sydney
A young filmmaker has won a scholarship to the International Film School Sydney after winning the school’s second annual Future Filmmaker competition.
Danny Kim, won the scholarship, worth $44,000, with his three minute film All the Best.
The theme of this year’s competition was “be daring”.
Duncan Thompson, head of school at IFSS said it was Kim’s interpretation of the theme that the judges responded to. Thompson said: “The panel found Danny Kim’s story about a character who dares to confront the pain of reliving happy memories from a better part of his life an excellent interpretation of the theme. The film also shows a delicate command of performance, casting, camera and lighting and the subtle nuances of lyrical editing.”
All the Best is the story of a young man who begins living on the streets after his fiancee dies. While on the streets with only a few dollars, Kim watches a home-video of him and his fiancee on the internet.
Kim said of his win: “I’ve always wanted to be a director, but pursued a career as an actor as I felt I needed to understand the actor’s craft first. I’m delighted to win this award as I feel I’m ready to take this amazing opportunity to turn what till now has been a dream into a rewarding and fulfilling career path. The Future Filmmaker competition has given me the chance to really express something heartfelt and simple. I’d always wanted to study at IFSS, and am honoured to be given this great opportunity.”
Of the competition, Thompson said: “This is the second year we have run the Future Filmmaker Competition, and again are bowled over by the high standard of imaginative entries. It’s wonderful to see talented filmmakers taking this opportunity to display their unique voices and engaging command of film storytelling.”
Oh wow that was really moving! Great film!
It’s exciting to know that we have young talent like that soon entering the Australian film industry. A scholarship well deserved. I hope to see more on the big screen from this talented individual with the help of IFSS.

b-b-b-b-boring!!!! a theme like ‘be daring’ could have any number of fun, exciting, entertaining scenarios and they picked this fluff?!?!
oh well, good luck to him, I’ll keep an eye out for his first feature in a few years – funded by screen australia for a couple of million, released to art-house cinemas only where it makes $50k at the box office. go australia!

The ability to create touching heartfelt moments translates to any kind of genre, any mode of storytelling, art-house, mainstream, comedy, drama.
What this guy has is what’s lacking from so many fun, exciting, entertaining scenarios.
With his creative ambitions, this fearless approach to sentiment and poignancy is what is going to see his career blossom and his work touch and move any kind of audience.
It will give life and depth to action films, romantic comedies, sci-fi, fantasy…the sky’s the limit.
I’m certain the bold approach to storytelling and deft use of drama, comedy, character, theme taught at IFSS will enable Danny to far exceed the expectations expressed in the jaded comment above.

Sure it was a bit cliche. Sure the acting was great. But it was a short film for a scholarship competition, and on that basis it is a great piece of art.
gary your cynicism might be founded in fact (and on the deteriorating reputation of Screen Australia) but you have no basis to just rip into ‘Danny’ like that. Until you show me a short you’ve made that defies all stereotypes and moves me emotionally within 3 minutes, keep quiet.
