Gardening shows prove a hit in the Friday TV ratings

Gardening appears to be the ticket to Friday night TV success, as Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens and ABC’s Gardening Australia were both channels’ top non-news shows.

Better Homes and Gardens clocked 601,000 metro viewers, while ABC’s Gardening Australia pulled in 430,000, according to OzTam’s preliminary overnight ratings.

The most-watched show of the night was Seven News, which pulled in 904,000 metro viewers and was the most popular show with key advertising demographics 16-39.

Nine News came in second position with 795,000 viewers and topped key advertising demographic 25-54, while its A Current Affair show attracted 574,000.

The AFL on Seven topped Nine’s NRL viewership figures, with 540,000 and 389,000 viewers respectively.

The AFL was shown across all five metro cities and topped key advertising demographic 18-49s. The NRL aired across just Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Seven won both main channel and total audience share, with 24.9% for its main channel and 36.5% once the multi channels had been added.

Nine came second with 16.2% for its main channel and 24.3% across the network.

The success of its news show – which pulled in 585,000 metro viewers – helped ABC beat Ten in main channel share, with 10.5% to Ten’s 9.8%. Once the entire network had been included, ABC achieved a 16.1% share while Ten held on to 15.8%.

SBS’ main channel managed a 4.8% share while its total network achieved 7.3%.
