Geoff Field departs Sydney’s 2SER-FM after station restructure

Geoff Field has finished as news director at 2SER 107.3, following a recent restructure at the station.

Since joining the team in 2017, Field has assisted in training hundreds of journalism students from Macquarie University and the University of Technology Sydney.

Commenting on his role as educator and mentor, Field told Mumbrella: “It’s been a privilege to teach so many talented students, not to mention being part of a radio station with such an important legacy in Sydney.

“The station got rid of the full time news director role which was my position since 2017. As I spent most of my career in commercial radio, I wasn’t sure how I’d go as a teacher, but I ended up really enjoying it. I was there for four years, so it was a bit of a shock, but so be it.”

As for where Field is off to next. he added: “I have been in commercial radio since I was 16-years-old. If I look back at working with Kyle & Jackie O, and all of those early mornings, and getting out of bed at 4am in the morning, it’ll be nice to just spend some time in my home up in Queensland, and just relax and think about what I’ll do next.”

During his 40-year radio career, Field has received four ACRA nominations for Best Metropolitan Newsreader and is best known for his 18-year tenure at 2DayFM.

Since joining 2SER-FM in 2017 Field has trained hundreds of journalism students from UTS and Macquarie University, with 70 of them have going on to jobs in the media.

“It’s really hard to get into journalism, and this newsroom at the university is another avenue gone, which is a pity, but hopefully 2SER will be able to work something out, and I’m very proud of the legacy that the newsroom has become, but I really do wish the network all the best,” Field concluded.

Field began his news reading career at the age of 16 on radio 2ST in Nowra, on the NSW South Coast. He has covered many of the biggest news stories to date, including the trial of the Anita Cobby murderers, death of Princes Diana, the impeachment of President Clinton, and the election of John Howard as Prime Minister of Australia.
