GetUp launches pro-gay marriage campaign
Activist group GetUp has released a video online and in social media to encourage support for gay marriage in Australia.
The release has been timed for the run-up to the Labor Party national conference.
The concept and scripting of the ad was done inhouse; production was by Motion Picture Company.
High quality production

Beautiful idea, stunning execution. CONGRATULATIONS to GetUp, Motion Picture Company and all others involved in this.
There is an inherent contradiction of public entities acknowledging the costs of discrimination (by funding equity and diversity training) but not being willing to take Federal policy action to resolve it (ie endorsing discriminatory laws rather than ending discrimination).
Purely as one example, Defence has Mandatory Equity and Diversity Awareness Training including Sexual Orientation Awareness, which “focuses on attitudes towards homosexuality, estimates on homosexual representation in the community, the invisible barriers of homophobia and heterosexism, the impact of hiding sexual orientation, the fear of disclosure, and the implications on the Defence mission.” http://www.defence.gov.au/fr/ARE/training.htm#6
When Jason Clare, Minister for Defence Materiel, appeared on Q&A he noted that “I think most Australians still think of marriage as between a man and a woman. I think what you can do is you can keep that but you can still recognise the importance and the special nature of a same sex relationship. … I’ve said on a few occasions I support the Prime Minister’s view but the Labor Party will get a chance to debate this at the national conference later this year.”

I wonder if Jason Clare has done the training.
There are many more public (as well as private and corporate) training, learning and education materials out there on this issue.
Look at what goes into suicide prevention, mental health and education programs, as well as workplace training, learning and development. Look at the cost of lost productivity due to bullying as a result of sexual preference. Workcover NSW, for example, even identifies that workers who are a minority due to their sexual preference can be at risk of bullying. See page 8: http://www.workcover.nsw.gov.a.....k_2054.pdf
Wouldn’t a more effective way for the Government to achieve cultural and social change be to cease endorsing discrimination and allow same-sex marriage and equal rights?

Lovely stuff.
They should run it in rotation with this one: http://youtu.be/6WMnRxsPWuw
One is emotive. One appeals to our herd-like nature (tip to Earls).
Shooting with both barrels will likely be most effective strategy.

Beautiful concept and execution – and one I can’t stop sharing. Discrimination is always wrong and impossible to justify – it’s tragic that this is still an issue in 2011.

We love it. It is time!

That gave my goosebumps. And nearly made me cry!

Luckily most of the people who sit around me are out at lunch – was able to shed a tear in peace. Such a quality piece of work.

wonder how would the lesbian version look like? would it be as cliche as the ‘good looking’ gay bff?

Just a stunning advertisement. The production values are excellent. A welcome relief from the usual crap out there.

This is so beautifully done but if you want a wakeup call as to some scary prevailing attitudes out there in the world read through the comments on YouTube.
I get the feeling most of them are from the US, but still… so much hate in the world, this campaign is so damn important!

Love it – congratulations to Get Up and all involved, just beautiful.

I’ve seen so much crap that I initially skipped over this – to my shame. Excellent work, truly excellent – and I hope a game changer in this long overdue for a resolution debate.

It’s about time same sex marriage was pushed to the top of the agenda.

I’m not sure that Kelly’s low assessment of Americans isn’t somewhat justified, but remember, far more progress has been made in the States regarding this issue than in Australia, so perhaps it is time to take a closer look at her own backyard. Just saying…

As both a gay man and a marketer, I love this piece of work. It is honest, emotional and well produced. The simple beauty of this work makes what should be a non-issue; appear to be very normal, human and everyday.
Judging by the number of times I’ve seen this appear in social media in recent days, it appears to be resonating with a broad range of people. Hopefully people who believe in marriage equality take the time to do more than post it to Facebook and visit http://www.getup.org.au/ to sign the online petition.
To the team of people that produced this beautiful piece of work, thank you.

ah yes, any excuse to bash the “Americans” Kelly… Jeremy is right, look in our own backyard first. Maybe you should take a few history courses as to where the gay rights movement started in the first place, dear.
