Grand Prix-winning Phil Shearer joins We Are Social as executive creative director

Phil Shearer We Are SocialPhil Shearer, whose work for Jim Beam won him a Grand Prix for direction at Cannes in 2003, has joined We Are Social as executive creative director.

Shearer joins the agency after stints at BD Network, R/GA Sydney and Iris, where he was closely aligned with the Shell account.

Last year We Are Social saw the departure of co-founder Julian Ward, who left in May.

Ward was replaced by former Host MD Suzie Shaw, who said the appointment of Shearer was a sign that social was no longer a niche part of the marketing mix.

“There’s a huge opportunity for brands to put social thinking at the heart of their marketing, and this is what we do. We’ve brought Phil in to help us deliver really big social ideas,” said Shaw.

Shearer said it was an opportunity to help show the power of social.

“A lot of marketing objectives seem to forget relevance to people’s lives, but social ideas have to be inherently useful,” said Shearer.

Shearer was part of the team at GPY&R which won the direct Grand Prix for its 1-900-9–JIMBEAM Campaign.
