The Greatest Showman finally tops weekend box office, after premiering on Boxing Day

Hugh Jackman’s musical film The Greatest Showman has taken the number one spot at the weekend box office, more than a month after it first premiered in Australia.

The film collected an additional $1.6m at the weekend box office across 281 screens, bringing its total earnings to $26.306m.

Jackman’s film premiered in Australia on Boxing Day, and made $4.220m.

It managed to earn more than new Margot Robbie film I, Tonya, which made $1.477m across 225 screens. On its first weekend at box office – which came the same week as Robbie’s Oscar Nomination – the film made $2.318m.

New crime thriller Den of Thieves entered the box office with $1.334m across 184 screens, according to the Motion Pictures Distributors Association of Australia report.

The film follows an elite group of county sheriff deputies who try to stop thieves who have plans to rob the Federal Reserve in Los Angeles.

Just behind Den of Thieves was Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle. The film collected $1.081m over the weekend.

Also new to the Australian weekend box office was a crime drama known as Molly’s Game. It’s based on the true story of Molly Bloom, a young Olympic-class skier who ran a high-stakes poker game for a decade.
