I, Tonya cracks $2m on opening weekend following Margot Robbie’s Oscar nomination
Australian actress Margot Robbie’s new film I, Tonya knocked Maze Runner: The Death Cure off the top spot at the weekend box office, collecting $2.318m on its first weekend.
The strong performance for the film comes the same week as the announcement Robbie had received an Oscar nomination for her role in the film.
Collecting another $2.246m over the weekend was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, earning more over the weekend than Maze Runner. The film has made $44.541m to date.
Maze Runner’s second weekend at box office was less successful than its first, earnings $2.141m. On it’s first weekend the film made $3.4m and topped the weekend box office.
Meanwhile, The Greatest Showman – the new film starring Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron – collected an additional $2.108m in earnings over 261 screens.
A new Bollywood film set in medieval India also entered the weekend box office with more than $1m in earnings.
Padmaavat tells the story of Queen Padmavati, who lives in a fortress with the king until a Sultan hears of her beauty and becomes obsessed.
It grossed $1.728m.
