‘I will work hard to engage the audience’: ABC’s Sally Sara steps into Radio National Breakfast presenter seat

ABC journalist Sally Sara is stepping into the presenter role of Radio National Breakfast next year.

Sara’s appointment will see her replace fellow reporter, Patricia Karvelas, who held the presenter position for the past decade before it was announced that she would be moving on to other projects within the broadcaster’s content ecosystem.

As an award-winning journalist, Sara’s career has taken her to over 40 countries, serving as a foreign correspondent for the ABC in territories such as Afghanistan, Iraq, India and Africa. In addition to presenting for the current affairs program The World Today since 2020, Sara’s resume also includes stints at programs Foreign Correspondent and Landline.

“Sally is one of the ABC’s most experienced journalists and beloved foreign correspondents,” Patricia said.

“I’m so happy for the Radio National listeners who will not only receive first class news and analysis every day but also benefit from Sally’s deep international experience at this time of great global upheaval.”

With Sara coming onboard, the ABC’s national affairs editor, Melissa Clarke, senior business correspondent Peter Ryan, and journalist Luke Siddham Dundon, will be joining her.

“Sally Sara is a hugely experienced journalist and broadcaster and it’s wonderful to welcome her to this key role on Radio National Breakfast,” expressed Justin Stevens, director for news at ABC.

“Patricia Karvelas has contributed enormously in this role, following on from Fran Kelly’s 17 years with the program, and Sally will continue a great tradition.

“Sally Sara, Peter Ryan, Melissa Clarke and Luke Siddham Dundon make a formidable team who will bring great expertise and insights to audiences and be part of setting the national agenda every day.”

“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to join the Radio National Breakfast team. I can’t wait,” Sara added.

“I will work hard to engage the audience with stories from across the country and around the world.”

December 16 to January 3 will see Sara present Summer Breakfast. Officially, the Sara-Clarke-Ryan-Dundon team will begin broadcasting on January 20, with the show’s new start time at 5:30am AEDT.
